Our team is headed by our three directors.
Adam looks after corporate clients as well as making strategic decisions and leading the Shepherd Partnership team. He is passionate about Skipton; living here and being involved in the thriving business community.
Tell us a bit about your career...
Tell us a bit about your career... When I left school my Dad suggested accountancy as a career choice. It sounded really interesting so I applied to local firms in North Wales where we lived at the time and I secured a position. On relocating to Yorkshire, I joined Shepherd Partnership, qualified (ACCA) in 1997, got my Practice Certificate for Audit in 2000, became partner in 2002, and finally a director in 2006.
What do you enjoy about your work?
Solid client relationships are an enjoyable part of what I do; being trusted advisors to local businesses and watching them succeed is very rewarding. Seeing new people come into and grow in their accounting careers is also great to see.
How about life away from the office?
As a keen runner, I have done the Great North Run every year since 2007. My other great passion is skiing. Family life is an important part of my life and I spend as much time as possible with my grown up son and daughter.
Tell us about a personal achievement…
I trekked to Everest base camp in 2019. It was incredible but very challenging – a once in a lifetime experience and achievement.
Heather joined Shepherd Partnership in 2015 and became Director in 2019. Her role involves all aspects of accounting, tax and advising clients but Heather also plays a key role in strategic decisions and business development.
I wanted to be an air hostess when I was younger…but I don’t like flying so that career was never going to take off! After finishing college, I applied for a role as an accountancy clerk and found I loved it. Having always been ambitious and with a desire to keep learning and progressing, I began studying alongside work and became ACCA and ATT qualified.
Do you enjoy what you do?
No day ever ends up as planned and no two days are the same…which is just the way I like it! My role fascinating and I enjoy interacting with lots of lovely people.
How about life outside of work?
Much of my spare time is spent at our local sports centre where I enjoy exercise classes which I find very motivational. I am also a keen swimmer. I am married with 3 grown-up children; twins (a boy and a girl) and another son.
Do you have any advice for business owners?
My advice specifically for anyone with a start-up business is to plan ahead for your tax bill. The transition from employment (where tax is taken at source) to paying tax as a lump-sum often comes as a shock.
Andrew, who now works part-time, has been involved in many of Shepherd Partnership’s developments through the years. His role involves reviewing accounts and offering advice for many of our individual, sole trader, partnership and farming clients.
I qualified back in 1983 with a big firm in Bradford (who are now part of KPMG) and joined Shepherd Partnership in 1986; becoming partner in 1987.
I went on to become Director in 2006 when the practice incorporated in its present structure.
What’s been the highlight of your career?
I’ve worked with many great clients over the years, who have grown older with me (and it’s been a pleasure)!
And what’s been the biggest change?
Digitisation! My advice is to make the best use technology for the essential things, both in the office and at home, but then enjoy life without it!
How do you spend your spare time?
Much of my spare time is spent with my wife at our static caravan at Pateley Bridge where we love walking in the local area. My home town of Otley also has some beautiful countryside to walk. I also enjoy reading.

Alison – Practice Administrator
Alison has been looking after our practice administration since 2005. Her role includes practice assurance and looking after our internal bookkeeping.
Tell us about something away from work...
One of the most mind-blowing experiences I’ve ever had was galloping along a deserted 2 or 3 mile stretch of beach in South Africa. It was unbelievably beautiful.
Angelique – Client Business Support Team
Angelique joined us in September 2018. Her role involves VAT, Sage, year-end accounts and helping businesses with Making Tax Digital.
What does life involve outside of work?
I spend a lot of time walking my dog. He’s a Rottweiler…with an accidental modelling career (he appears on a local pub’s website and was recently snapped for a book)!
Anne – Client Business Support Team
Anne started with us in September 2016. Her experience includes looking after the books for her husband’s and brother’s businesses. Being AAT qualified and having seen things from a client’s perspective helps Anne to understand your needs.
What’s your top tip for clients?
If something is outside your expertise, get advice before starting. A quick chat with us first may help to avoid mistakes.
Carly – Client Business Support Team
Carly joined us in 2019.
Charlotte – Marketing Consultant
Charlotte joined us in 2017 as our Marketing Consultant. She looks after communications and events for the firm. She is always looking for new opportunities for the firm to be involved in the local business community.
What do you like to do away from work?
I’m a Mum to a little girl and also a keen runner. I combine these things by running with her (in the pram) as often as possible!
Chris – Corporate Client Manager
Chris joined us in 2003, having previously worked at an accountancy firm in Leeds. He’s nearly always worked in Practice and has a wealth of experience.
Did you always want to be an accountant?
My mum wanted me to be an accountant…but I wanted to be a singer or a footballer. I’m happy with how things turned out though as I enjoy the satisfaction of happy clients and a finished job.
Gillian – Accountant
Gillian - who has a BEC National Diploma in Business Studies and is AAT qualified – knows the company inside out, having worked with us for over 30 years.
What was your dream career when you were a child?
I wanted to do accounts (or something numbers-related) from the age of 7. I used to beg my teacher to let me take the maths textbook home!
Gordon – Senior Accounts Manager
Gordon joined Leech & Co. (who were later taken over by Shepherd Partnership) in 1982. He looks after a portfolio of clients, many of whom are from agricultural businesses.
Yes, I enjoy it! I have no regrets in my career choice (I never had plans to be an F1 driver)!
Joanne - Receptionist
Joanne took on this pivotal role in 2019, bringing valuable experience to the position. First impressions are important…and Joanne is the first, smiling face you see when you visit our offices and will often be the person on the end of the phone, helping to direct your queries.
Lyn – Agricultural Manager
Lyn, who has been with us for around 20 years, primarily prepares accounts, tax returns and VAT returns for agricultural clients.
We all have varied roles and experience – so, whatever you need to know, someone will be able to help.
Michael – Client Business Support Team
Michael joined us in May 2004, having worked in accountancy and finance since leaving college. His role involves wages, VAT and accounts preparation.
What got you into accountancy?
My dream was to be a footballer (I went for trials), but I was also good with numbers, so accountancy seemed a logical choice.
I worked in a practice straight from college and enjoyed the variety and satisfaction of the role.
Yvette - Payroll Manager
Yvette joined the team in 2014. Her experience in other accountancy practices meant she was well-equipped to take control of our busy payroll department.
What’s the greatest achievement of your career so far?
It was a HUGE accomplishment implementing the changes (and challenges!) that Auto-enrolment created. Getting everything in good order was a great triumph!
