HM Revenue and Customs has changed how it repays overpayments to PAYE (Pay As You Earn) taxpayers, i.e. those who do not file Self Assessment tax returns.
Previously, any refunds which were not claimed online within 21 days would be followed up by a cheque sent by HMRC. This no longer applies and taxpayers must take now action for the repayment to be issued.
Taxpayers can visit tax overpayments and underpayments to claim the repayment they are due, but instructions showing how to claim should accompany the tax calculation, with alternative methods for those who are not able to claim online.
There are lots of scams around offering tax repayments so please be aware of any suspicious emails, text messages or other such communications. Please be mindful that any links within the message are probably a scam. Details of current known HMRC scams can be found here.
