HMRC has started switching its online tax services to a new sign-in system called GOV.UK One Login. You may have noticed that when you go to sign in to your HMRC account, say to pay your tax, you are now prompted to use (or create) a GOV.UK One Login instead of the traditional Government Gateway ID.

Here’s what this change means for you.

What is GOV.UK One Login?

GOV.UK One Login is a new, centralised sign-in system being rolled out across all government online services. Instead of having separate logins for HMRC, DVLA, Universal Credit, and other government departments, the aim is to eventually give each user just one secure account for all services.

Why is it being introduced?

We understand that GOV.UK One Login is designed to:

  • Improve security

  • Make it easier to access multiple government services with a single account

Do you need to create a new login?

In most cases, yes, but only when prompted.  You can register your interest if you want to join as soon as possible.

If you currently sign into HMRC using a Government Gateway ID, that login will still work until HMRC switches your service to the One Login. When this happens, you’ll see a message instructing you to create a GOV.UK One Login account.

You’ll need:

  • An email address you can access

  • A mobile phone

  • ID such as a passport or driving licence (for identity verification)

Your tax information and existing HMRC records should automatically link to your new login once you complete the process.

What if you don’t use a government gateway log in?

If we manage your tax affairs, nothing is changing in how we access your HMRC data. The move to One Login affects only how you personally sign in to your HMRC online services.

Will Government Gateway disappear?

HMRC has confirmed that Government Gateway will be phased out gradually.

What should you do now?

  • If you see the new sign-in screen, you can go ahead and create your GOV.UK One Login.

  • If not, you can continue using your Government Gateway ID until HMRC asks you to switch.

  • Make sure your email and mobile number are up to date in HMRC’s records.
