We have been made aware that a letter being sent is asking the recipient to verify financial information with HMRC is not genuine.
The letter may appear genuine as it is addressed from HMRC “Indv and Small Business Compliance” It is asking for people to reply to a government initiative by emailing documents to HMRC. They are asking for business bank statements, accounts, VAT returns, and driving licences.
The letter is fraudulent.
If any phone call, text, letter or email received is suspicious or unexpected please never supply any private information, reply, download attachments or click on links. Do not rely on caller ID on phones as numbers can be spoofed.
If you are unsure if any correspondence is genuine report it to HMRC. If you suspect you have had money stolen you should get in contact with your bank immediately and it should be reported to Action Fraud.
