HMRC increase enquiries into holiday lets

A Freedom of Information request* to HMRC showed nearly 2,000 enquiries were started during the 2023-24 tax year into the affairs of those holiday let owners who HMRC believe are failing to declare their income. In 2022/23 and the 2021/22 the figures were 375 and 95 respectively.

It was announced in the 2024 Spring Budget that the holiday let tax rules are to be abolished from April 2025. The draft legislation was still awaited at the time of writing.
