HMRC has recently added the British driving licence as an additional evidence source when creating a government gateway, which they believe will help taxpayers to get online.
Two forms of evidence are needed to prove identity online. Other forms of acceptable evidence are:
Tax credit claim details
P60 or most recent payslips
UK passport details
Information held on the taxpayer’s credit file (such as loans, credit cards or mortgages)
Self Assessment tax return (in the last 3 years)
You should never disclose your government gateway log in details to anyone. These are personal to you and you should keep them secure as you would your online banking details.
