Proof of identity to create government gateway account

HMRC has recently added the British driving licence as an additional evidence source when creating a government gateway, which they believe will help taxpayers to get online.

Two forms of evidence are needed to prove identity online. Other forms of acceptable evidence are:

  • Tax credit claim details

  • P60 or most recent payslips

  • UK passport details

  • Information held on the taxpayer’s credit file (such as loans, credit cards or mortgages)

  • Self Assessment tax return (in the last 3 years)

You should never disclose your government gateway log in details to anyone. These are personal to you and you should keep them secure as you would your online banking details.
